THE ROMAN MILITARY No powerful civilization has ever excised without a well-organized military. The Republic of Rome and Imperial Rome would have no been so influential to civilizations across the globe without a powerful military. Imperial Rome conquered vast lands from Britain to North Africa, from Egypt to Judea with their military which consisted of well discipline soldiers from their generals to the simple foot soldiers. This military was not an armed mob with clubs and spear; they were a high skilled set of professional soldiers. Over the vast Roman Empire the military executed the will of the emperor. Analysis on the poem Essay This poem For Heidi with Blue Hair is about a girl, Heidi, who was sent home for dyeing her hair blue. Even though she did not break any school rules by doing so, the headmistress insisted that she was only allowed to dye her hair in the school colours, grey, white and flaxen yellow.  In my opinion, Heidi was a rebellious girl. In many places, dyeing of hair was not seen as a very appropriate thing to do, especially for a student. Also, her hairs colour was being dyed ultramarine on the clipped sides, with a crest of jet-black spikes on top, this was somewhat a really rebellious thing to do in my point of view, as by doing this, she became different from everybody else, not following the trend. When she wiped your eyes, she especially noted that they were also not in a school colour. It seemed to me that she wanted to rebel against the school purposely by not doing everything the school wanted her to do. Furthermore, when her dad called the school, he said that she discussed it with me first- we checked the rules. It seemed to me that she checked the school rules for loop holes in them before attempting to rebel, so the school could not do anything to her, and even discussed the matter with her parent, so the school could not say that she had done so without having parents consent. Also in the third last stanza, she told her dad that it cost twenty-five dollars. Tell them that it wont wash out, not even if I wanted to try. This showed that she had purposely chosen to dye her hair in a more expensive and better way, so that it would not wash out. The second half of the second sentence- not even if I wanted to try showed that she did not plan to even try to get the colour out of her hair; instead, she planned for it to stay on her hair for quite a long time. She had done all of these just to go against the school and her headmistress, and to do what she want while not letting the school punish her for it. Thus, in my opinion, shes a very rebellious girl. My other impression about the girl Heidi was that, she would do everything to get what she wants. Her main aim here seemed to me to be dyeing her hair blue to mock the school rules. First of all, before she even dyed her hair, she had checked the school rules and even discussed the matter with her dad; to know that the school would not be able to have any reasonable reasons to hold against her when they found out about her hair, since she had not broke the school rules. After she was sent home, she cried to her dad about the incident, which feels really fake to me. It was as if she was just pretending to cry to make her dad sympathise her so that he would call up the school, and when he does, she wiped her eyes immediately, seeing that it would not have any more use. It to me as if she was specifically trying to use the soft spot her father seems to have for her, and also his freedom- loving personality to achieve what she wanted. Therefore, it seems to me that Heidi was the kind of girl who would use everything she has to achieve what she wants. In the last two stanzas, my impression of Heidi did not change much, but there was still a little change. In the second last stanza, I realised that Heidi did not have a mother, and I started to pity her. I thought that maybe growing up without a female influence was why she had grown to be so rebellious. I also thought that she might not have always been like this, but her mothers death had left her heart-broken and resulting in her turning rebellious. However, when she mentioned that It was unfair to mention your mothers death, but that shimmered behind the arguments. It seemed to me that she tried to use her mothers death as an excuse for her actions, and also to make the teachers pity her so that they would allow her to have her hair blue. This again emphasized on her rebellious actions, showing that she felt that she had to fight and rebel against t he school to win. Through this poem, I felt that Heidi was a rebellious girl who would use any possible excuses and reasons she could use to achieve something she wants. My impression of her stayed mostly the same throughout except one part where I pitied her for losing her mother, but soon abandoned that thought as I realised that she was not heart-broken over the fact that she does not have a mother, but planned to use that as an excuse. ii) What is the poets attitude towards the school system and how has she shown this?  In this poem, For Heidi with Blue Hair, the poet Fleur Adcocks language was full of precision and control, and she exudes a distinctive air of knowingness. It isnt hard to guess that she was definitely on Heidis side, mocking the inflexible school system.  In the second stanza, the headmistress noted that although dyed hair was not specifically forbidden, yours was apart from anything else, not done in the school colour. This showed that Heidis school wanted the students to do follow the schools fashion in everything they do and to be uniformed. Also, the poet phrased the sentence as as the headmistress put it, by phrasing it this way instead of the headmistress said, it gives the reader a sense that the headmistress saying something unreasonable and that she was trying to cover the loophole in the school rules such that Heidis blue hair would not be allowed. Furthermore, in the second last stanza, the poet mentioned the The school had nothing else against you ; teachers twittered and give in. This seemed that when all the reasons were for Heidi and that the school could not find any more reasons to punish Heidi for, the teachers still twittered about it, not wanting to give in. This essay seeks to compare their attitude toward the sea with that expressed in another Old English poem, The Seafarer.    In Beowulf there is one reference after another to the sea. When Scyld died, â€Å"his people caried him to the sea, which was his last request,† where he drifted out into the beyond on a â€Å"death ship.† In the Geat land Beowulf, a â€Å"crafty sailor,† and his men â€Å"shoved the well-braced ship out on the journey they’d dreamed of,† to rescue the Danes from Grendel. â€Å"From far over the sea’s expanse,† the Geats came, â€Å"brave men who come over the sea swells.† In his welcoming speech Hrothgar recalls that the hero’s father â€Å"sought us Danes over the rolling waves,† and his warrior Unferth remembers that the hero â€Å"struggled with Brecca [youthful companion] in the broad sea in a swimming contest †¦ risked his life in the deep water †¦ hugged the sea, gliding through the boiling waves †¦ toiled seven nights in the sea.† A Dane â€Å"was tending to every courtesy† for Beowulf, for â€Å"such in those days could a seafarer expect.† King Hrothgar and Queen Welhtheow gave rich gifts â€Å"to those on the mead-bench who made the sea-journey.† In the Finnburh Episode, Hengest had to spend the winter months with Finn because â€Å"he could not steer his ring-prowed ship on the cold sea.†Ã‚   â€Å"Guthlaf and Oslaf spoke of their grief after the sea-journey.† The Danes carried Hildeburh, the queen of Danish ancestry, â€Å"over the sea.† â€Å"The surging waters† received Beowulf as he swam in pursuit of Grendel’s mother. During the battle Hrothgar and his retinue stared down at the â€Å"turbulent water.† Finally Beowulf returned, â€Å"protector... ... A man may bury his brother with the dead and strew his grave with the golden things he would have him take, tresures of all kinds, but gold hoarded when he here lived cannot allay the anger or God towards a soul sin-freighted.      The Seafarer concludes with a rather lengthy prose exhortation to his heareres to fix their hopes on heaven.    The characters in the Old English poem Beowulf certainly delighted in the seas. Women in the United States are experiencing unprecedented opportunities to pursue education and professional careers. One potential down side to this situation is that women find themselves putting off starting a family until they complete their education and feel comfortable in their employment. In many cases this can extend into the woman’s late 30’s or even early 40’s.   Advanced maternal age may also have negative effects on fertility and the outcomes of a successful pregnancy. Considering all the factors, a woman should consider putting off starting a family and build a career as long as she has educated herself on all the risks of advanced maternal age.For years, women have been under the assumption that as long as they were bearing children under the age of 35, fertility and child mortality were at a minimum.   Recent studies have shown that this assumption is far from the truth and may eliminate childbearing for those women who wait into their late 30 ’s and early 40’s to start having children.   Education for women by gynecologists and obstetricians has been insufficient and most women are â€Å". . . surprised—even shocked—to learn that fertility begins to fall in their late 20’s (Hatcher, 2002).†Ã‚   Most women are finding out too late that they have simply put off having children too long and are now unable to bear children without intervention.   Fertility treatments are an expensive option, but are only available to those that can afford the treatments that insurance does not cover.Pregnancies that do occur at advanced maternal age have lower success rates.   Increased maternal age, typically over the age of 35, carries higher chances of miscarriage; higher increases in pregnancy complications like high blood pressure, diabetes, and placental problems; and increased chance of having a child with a chromosomal disorder (Children’s Specialist, 2007).   The good news is that medical advances in prenatal and perinatal care have diminished the effects that many of these complications have on pregnancies at advanced maternal age.   Safe pregnancies after the age of 35 are occurring at much higher rates with advanced blood testing and ultrasounds that allow early detection and treatment of potential problems.For many modern women, pursuing education and professional careers are the norm.   More women than ever in history are pursuing careers, not just jobs that add extra income.   Most career paths take years to build in order to reach the top of success.   The drive to achieve and succeed has pushed many women toward putting off starting a family till their careers are firmly on track.   With medical care helping to make child bearing in later years safer, women are choosing to put careers before family.   There are many advantages for women to wait to start a family:Financial stability Relationship stability Increased maturity Increased l ife experiences Larger support networks Better education Although these advantages may be present for a younger mother, the chance of a woman having all the advantages increases with age.   These advantages allow the mother to provide the best possible start for the child and to be the best mother she has the potential to be.The dilemma remains that when women take themselves out of the workforce to bear a child, a disadvantage occurs when compared to male counterparts.   An argument can be made that a woman with an established career and older age may have a better chance of regaining status once she returns to work due to her previous proven results and successes.   A younger woman just starting out in a career and taking a leave of absence to bear a child will not have a consistent track record to fall back on once she returns to work.   The advantage that an advance maternal age woman has may be the difference between a successful return to a career rather than being pas sed over for those who are not choosing to bear children.  Ã‚   The dilemma to put off childbearing looms large for many career women and must be considered along with the risks of advanced maternal age.There is hope for women who choose to honor both children and careers.   Proper education, healthy lifestyles, current medical advances, and pure determination help women of advanced maternal age have the balanced lives they desire.   While it is true that fertility declines in the late 20’s and that â€Å". . . women perform best at childbearing when they are young. . . In perspective, social networks (like YouTube or Skype) outsource their work to cloud services to help store user data. More so, it seems as if digital life is linked to the storage systems of cloud servers. Think about it, with out a back up storage in the cloud, there wouldn’t be a free YouTube, Tumbler, and blogging would essentially be news posts by big businesses. Cloud computing will continue to advance in ways that further accommodates all online users. About the only disadvantage of this are those with out Internet connection, the people left out of the Internet community. However, for the time being, cloud computing’s growth in the United States and American websites using cloud resources, prove to be helpful in the spreading of information from social to private perspectives of data usage. Conclusion: Hence, it is evident that cloud computing will be growing exponentially so long as the Information Technology sector continues to be in high demand. Therefore it is up to the consumers individual needs to decide if cloud computing would help them keep tabs with their data usage online or if using their own memory on their computer is a better decision. On the other end, companies should use Cloud Computing servers as a cheaper form of Information Technology management. Especially since investing in a mainframe computer would be far more costly than having some other company do all the work for you for a smaller fee. Therefore, cloud computing will definitely be a primary factor in the growth and facilitation of online data usage and continue to revolutionize modern technology. Sustainable Energy Sources Energy is life. Life on this planet depends upon a fixed amount of energy. The modern industrialized energy sources such as coal and petroleum were originally utilized for their seeming promiscuity and high energies yielded per unit volume. The world has now become painfully aware of how finite petroleum reserves are, not to mention the political complications associated with being dependent upon foreign countries for an energy supply. To add insult to injury, the limitedness of petroleum resources is not the most pressing problem, their polluting byproducts are. The enormous amounts of byproduct waste that finds its way into our environment is having effects which even the most renowned of experts cannot determine in magnitude. Speaking from an economic standpoint, petroleum will soon become more expensive to find and utilize than reasonable alternatives, raising it’s costs far above it’s benefits. Some could already make the point that the social and environmental cos ts never were weighed appropriately into the cost/benefit analysis of petroleum and that the benefits associated with petroleum combustion have rarely or never outweighed it’s costs. This point will gain a painful clarity in the years to come if the predictions of some meteorologists come true and the effects of global warming are felt. For years developing societies have been taking enormous amounts of potential energy locked within pressurized biomass that took millions of years to store in the Earth’s crust and releasing it into today’s world.
