buy custom Oedipus the King essay

buy custom Oedipus the King essay The story of the King Oedipus begins when an oracle foretold that a child born to Laius, king of Thebes by his queen Jocasta, would slay his father and wed his mother. With this in mind, Laius had his sons feet riveted together and left to die in Mount Cithaeron, where a shepherd found him and handed him to his master Polybus, the King of Corinth, who took him in as his son (he was childless) (Helaine, 2005). Although he was brought up away from his father, he later encounters and unwillingly slew his father king Laius although he thought he had attacked a caravan of low-class travelers thus fulfilling the prophecy. When Oedipus arrived in Thebes, he managed to answer the riddle of thee Sphinx, and the Thebans made him their king where he ruled and married the widow of King Laius and sired many children (Helaine, 2005). After many years of success, a plague vexes the city and Kreon, the Brother of Iokaste goes to Oedipus with news from the oracle that the plague would only be lifted after the death of Laius is avenged. Oedipus in return says that, he knows the terrible fate of the Thebes and vows to find the murderer using his intelligence, but when Tiresias confronted him with the truth, Oedipus is blid to it (Helaine, 2005). This shows us what kind of ruler Oedipus is; that Oedipus was intentionally choosing what to believe as true and what to say is false according to be benefits, and if the issue was going to affect him and his Kingdom. Tiresias was a blind seer who was trusted and respected by all people as upheld by his introduction as the holy prophet in who alone of all men truth was born. Upon telling Oedipicus the hard truth, Tiresias is shunned, his credibility and motives attacked and finally accused of plotting against the King and helping Kreon become King (Helaine, 2005). In response to these accusations which the people believed, Tiresias tells Oedipus that he was blind even though he had two eyes to the wretchedness of his life and the wrongs that he had done to the people, the earth and the world below. The use of blindness is used to call to attention the fact that Oedipus could not see the truth about himself and his past, even though he had eyes, and that it took a blind man Teresias to show him the real truth and overcome his blindness. Teiresias goes ahead to say to Oedipus, the double lash of your parents curse wiill whip you. Out of this land someday with only night upon your precious eyes (Helaine, 2005). It was not until the shepherd gave his confession of how he saved a boy and took him to his King that Oedipus was filled with grief and guilt upon realizing the truth that the prophecy came to pass. Oedipus blinds himself and goes on to live in exile where he died in the wild hills of Kithairon. This is where his parents had intended for him without his family or daughters who he had ashamed and brought destruction to. Finally Oedipicus physically blinds himself on seeing his dead mother and is the cause of his own exile, which is complete irony since when he had the eyes, he could not see the truth yet now that he does not have them he ca clearly see the truth. The story of Oedipicus shows us that, having good eyesight does not necessarily mean that one can see and understand situations, but it takes an open mind, logic and proper analysis of the facts to know the correct truth. Blindness is used as irony in the story to bring out the magnitude of Oedipicus errors and diversion from the truth yet all along he knew what he had done, who his father was and what the oracle had said about the prophecy.. An Individual decision making process analysis project Essay

An Individual decision making process analysis project - Essay Example This business project involves the provision of catering service to people who intend to hold parties at their houses. This might involve anybody from young children, teenagers and adults. Also all sorts of catering services required will be made available via the workforce available from the company. The reason why the ‘time to party’ project looks viable is that many people like to have parties in the present time. However, most of these people do not have the time and manpower to organize and execute such a celebration. However, they might have the cash to pay for the service and that is where this project fits in. however, there is one unique feature about this business that separates if form the others. Time to party will prepare the ordered food away from the party venue and transport it there. This will help to avoid privacy invasion and will reduce the amount of activities in the venue. This will also help utilize other resources that are not in the venue but are available in the company. This is therefore an investment with a bright future. Business objectives There are two main objectives that the ‘time to party’ project aims to achieve. I. Make good profits from the catering services provided. II. Become the biggest home catering services in Sheffield The enlisted objectives provide just but the big picture. All will agree that much profits means expansion of the business. When the business expands and the name is well established, there will be much room for development in this project. In addition, becoming the biggest catering company will allow room for capacity to hold many events at once without breaking a sweat thus better profitability. Competitors In the world of business, there will always be other businesses to battle with for the market share and reputation. This greatly affects not only the profitability of the project, but the ability to run efficiently and stay in the same market segment. There are seven cater ing service providing companies in Sheffield I. Organic fusion II. The tiffin company III. Carols catering service limited IV. The milestone on the move V. Hazels catering limited VI. Coco catering limited VII. Deli venture catering limited The largest competitor for the ‘time to party’ project is the coco catering limited. This is a well-organized and well-funded business institution. They have a high profile physical and online presence and consumer preference. This is due to their flexibility and the high quality services they provide. They also have a well-developed website that gives all their information and allow for special bookings. However, they do not offer an online payment and ordering system for home deliveries on a daily basis and this is one of the loopholes that ‘time to party’ will exploit. In addition, time to party will offer a new service that is not on their service list. With these two major issues, ‘time to part’ has the power to stand against coco catering. Target audience This project mostly targets people who have the desire to celebrate many events, have the money to do it but lack the time, resources and man power to ensure a successful execution of an event. This will include adults that work and university students that hold celebrations such as birthday or any other. This is the majority group that falls among the top desired clients. However, the company will

Economics Assignment - Essay Example Such a development is likely to hike the price of oil given that the demand for oil remains fixed. The pressure upon the price level is heightened given the fact the unavailability of suitable substitutes of the product. The key terms to be addressed in the present paper are demand and supply schedules, equilibrium points and substitutes. Demand and supply schedules constitute of the market forces prevalent in nation. While the former is the locus of various price levels and the corresponding amount of aggregate demand made by the consumers, the latter is the reflection of the aggregate amount that the suppliers are going to provide in the market at any given level of price (Mankiw, 2008, p. 65). Equilibrium points are determined at the intersection of demand and supply schedules; these are the points at which aggregate demand and aggregate supply match with one another. An economy is expected to operate at the equilibrium point at its optimum (Frank & Bernanke, 2006, p. 66). Lastly, substitutes imply the goods which both consumers and suppliers are likely to replace for any particular commodity. If two goods are perfect substitutes, any discrepancy in the market forces of one is reflected in that of the other. For instance, a shortage in the supply of one leading to a hike in its equilibrium price level will be mirrored through a hike in the demand for another good that is a perfect substitute, as more and more people rush to avail the latter commodity instead of the first. However, if two goods are imperfect substitutes, a discrepancy originating in one will not be reflected much in that of the other (Poterba, 1999, p. 31). The present problem is that of a situation that is likely to arise due to a crunch in the availability of oil. Since oil could be used for multiple purposes and does not have many substitutes to replace it perfectly, the demand for oil could be regarded to be quite inelastic in nature (represented by the red curve). Archstone-Smith Trust Risk Assessment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Archstone-Smith Trust Risk Assessment - Essay Example Archstone-Smith Trust. Since 1970, Archstone-Smith has increased market viability, customer base, and stock prices. Market value of the Archstone-Smith Trust in 2002 was around $10 billion dollars and now it's around $19 billion dollars. This report will try to find and analyze its S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threat) and provide recommendations the company's future. This includes an analysis of the major competitor, Equity Residential, and a critical review of the base theories and the manner in which Archstone-Smith functions. Archstone-Smith Trust began as a Texas REIT (Real-Estate Investment Trust) named El Paso Real-Estate Investment Trust. In 1960 Congress established REIT, which opened the window of opportunity to the small investors invests in real estate in a manner similar to mutual funds. Investors could take REIT public and be able to trade their share in the same mannerism as corporations traded stocks. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as normal stock exchanges monitored these REIT public trades. In 1970 the company decided to change its name from El Paso Real Estate Trust to Property Trust of America. Property Trust of America started investing in a wide range of real estate with its new name. In 1980 the company's portfolio reached from shopping malls to a Holiday inn in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The evaluation was difficult because REIT's assets were so diversified into various sectors. William D. Sanders, the real estate mogul joined Property Trust America and focused on the apartment market in the Southwest. In 1989, Sizeler Property Investment Inc. decided to take over the Property Trust America, but in the middle of negotiation Sizeler gave up and sold their share to SWRT. SWRT was a company that was specially established by Sanders to buy back the shares from Sizeler Property Investment Inc. Soon after Sanders retired he established a new form of business venture that invests in real estate, investment banking, consulting, and research with help from some institutional investors. The name of the company was Security Capital Group and its first investment was Property Trust America. When REIT hired Southwest Realty Advisors to consult Property Trust America they recommend Property Trust America to focus on Apartments. In 1991, Property Trust America went public to expend fund. Property Trust America focused its business in apartment buildings during the 90's. Brand Creation The brand name Archstone was named by Lippincott &Margulies, one of the best branding firms in the U.S., to create the first national brand in apartments. Uses and Applications of Acid and Bases

Uses and Applications of Acid and Bases Rami Saadat Acid and bases in our life Acid and bases are very important in our everyday activity. Almost every liquid you find is acid or bases but it is not just liquid you can find it almost everywhere. Both are used in our usual activity especially in our body. They have a variety of uses like in medicine, food, cleaning, fertilization, industry and as I mentioned before they are used in our body so it allow it to function properly. Acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) in water solution. (1) The ability to produce theses ions give acid their unique property that they have. (1) It is also a substance that have a PH less than 7 when it is seven that mean it is neutral .(2) A PH scale is a scale that show acidic or basic a solution is. (2) .The more a substance is acidic then that means the lower its PH is. (2) for example we have lemon juice that have citric acid and ascorbic acid which is vitamin C, lemon have a PH of two which mean it is acidic. (2) There is an organic substance that is called indicator that changes color when it touches an acid or a base. (1) An example of this organic substance is blue litmus paper that turns red in acid. (1) There are many types of acids like hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. (3) When some acid is intact with metal it sometimes react strongly which eat it away as metallic compound and hydrogen gas form, acids also donate H+ and its solution can transfer/move electricity. (1) Also is have a sour taste and when it react with base it give us salt and water. (1) Give sharp stinging pain when put on a cut or wound. (4) Bases are a substance that produces hydroxide ions when it dissolves in water. (1) It is considered any substance that accepts (H+) from acids. (1) When acids donate H+ the one to take them is bases in other world both are complement to each other. (1) Of course that is not all; bases have a lot of property. For example it feel slippery this feeling is caused because when it touch your skin it to dissolve a little bit, taste bitter, react with oils and greases, and it is frequently solids.(5) When the PH is above seven that mean that it is a base.(5) It also cause red litmus indicator to turn blue and its solution can transfer electricity. (6)There are a lot of types of bases like aluminum hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, ammonia, etc. (1) As you know in the blood you have acid and bases and there are mechanisms in our body that control the balance between acid and bases. (7) The one in charge in controlling the blood PH are the lungs and the kidney. (7) The lungs can increase the blood PH by releasing higher amount of carbon dioxide than usually. (7) As you know carbon dioxide is mildly acidic which cause the acidity of the blood to increase in the lungs the things that affect the increase of PH in blood are depth and speed of breathing.(7) We also have the kidney that helps control the acids and bases by regulating their release but it take more time for it to regulate the PH than the lungs because it release bases and acid in minute amount. (7) In out body there is a place where you can find acid (HCl) which is found in the stomach. There is also the Buffer system that contain weak bases and the weak acids that form naturally in the body but once the balance is broke and incline toward one of them, the weaker one st art to excreting correspondingly and as a result of that it become balanced again there are two things that help the buffer system which are carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions. (7) Acid and bases can be found also at our houses. They can be found in food, cleaning fluid, etc. At home they are of a great use in mostly cleaning and food. In case of food we have these which are acids: vinegar, soda, beer, lemons, grapefruits, tomatoes, etc. (8) anything from a citric fruit contains citric acid which is weak, the vinegar contains acetic acid which is strong, in soda it contain carbonic acid which is weak. We also have batteries that contain sulfuric acid. (9) In case of household bases we have antacids, milk of magnesia, ammonia, drain openers, baking soda, soap, oven cleaners and detergents. (9) Baking soda contains sodium hydrogen carbonate which is base, ammonia (NH3) is found in some cleaners, soap have potassium hydroxide, oven cleaners contain sodium hydroxide. (7) We can also find acid and bases in agriculture which is used to grow plant. The effect of acid and base on plants varies, depending on the concentration they may improve the plant health or damage it. (7) Both of them have been used for centuries as fertilizer to give the plants nutrients they needed to grow. (7) You need a proper PH level for plans to grow and to ensure its health. (7) With and imbalanced level of PH the plant can become sick, refuse to grow and can die. (7) Some soils already contain a specific amount of acid and bases but that depend of where you live and with this you can determine what type of plant to grow and suited for this area and what are not.(7) in the case of fertilizers they are rated by their acidity or basicity. (7) Some contain a lot and some contain a little so you have to be careful with which one you use in your plant because some are very strong that they cause an unbalance and raise the PH of the plant and that may cause it to die, stop growing , etc. (7) there is Hydrangea which is one of the flowers that show different colors, and that depend on the acidity of the soil that it grow in. (6) If the top part is blue that mean it was planted in a slightly acidic soil and if the bottom part is pink that mean it was planted in more based soil. (6) What I want to say that the acidity and the basic of the soil I very important in the grow of plants and before planting you have to see if the soil have a balanced PH or not. Acid and bases can be also use in medicine to avoid getting your body pH-high. if in our body the PH level change it will damage us a lot because it will it affects our cell production and reproduction. (10) The PH level have to be balanced because if not the digestion won’t work properly in our stomachs.(10) if doesn’t go back to normal it will cause harm to our body.(10) To avoid having your PH level high you must avoid food that have acids in them. (10) If you have too much acid your organs your organs will stop neutralizing acid and then you need a doctor because if the PH level go over the normal level it can be very dangerous. (10) There are a lot of different disease that shut your neutralization like for example we have Heartburn which is a disease where the PH of your stomach acid decreases from its average level of PH which is 2, if you have this disease you will need medicine against the decrease of PH and the medicine which you take to cure you are produ ced from bases which can return the level of PH to its normal state which is 2. (10) If in the other hand you have an increase in the level of PH of acidity in your stomach you have to take a medicine like magnesium hydroxide to lower the level of PH to it normal state. Both acids and bases are also used in industries. Acid is often used to clean and remove rust in a process called pickling. (9) They use sulfuric acid as and electrolyte in wet cells battery for the car battery.(9) strong acids especially sulfuric acid is used in mineral processing for example we have phosphate mineral that react with sulfuric acid and produce phosphoric acid that can be used as phosphates fertilizers. (9) In chemical industries acids react in neutralization reaction that are used to produce salt for example we have nitric acid that react with ammonium and that produce ammonium nitrate which is salt. (9) Acids are added to food and to drinks to alter their taste and it serve as preservative for example we have phosphoric acid which is used as a component of cola drinks. (9) now we have bases that are used a lot in industries after all acids and bases are complement of each other. Bases are used to make soaps, also fertilizers, some others are used as explosive l ike in mining works, also it is used to make paper which is very important and an important resource in the removal of grease and they are needed for neutralizing acids they are needed. (9) Although there were big evolution in the chemical industry in the use of acid, bases, and other substance but these industry polluted the world to an unimaginable level they polluted the sea, lakes, the air, etc. it also caused a lot of diseases and the release of pollutant into the atmosphere caused acid rain which will destroy vegetation and will kill off fishes because it lower the level of PH in the water and that caused the fish to die. After doing this essay I learned a lot about acid and bases and their use in our daily life. A Comparison of the Sea in Beowulf and The Seafarer Essay -- compariso

The Sea in Beowulf and The Seafarer      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The characters in the Old English poem Beowulf certainly delighted in the seas. This essay seeks to compare their attitude toward the sea with that expressed in another Old English poem, The Seafarer.    In Beowulf there is one reference after another to the sea. When Scyld died, â€Å"his people caried him to the sea, which was his last request,† where he drifted out into the beyond on a â€Å"death ship.† In the Geat land Beowulf, a â€Å"crafty sailor,† and his men â€Å"shoved the well-braced ship out on the journey they’d dreamed of,† to rescue the Danes from Grendel. â€Å"From far over the sea’s expanse,† the Geats came, â€Å"brave men who come over the sea swells.† In his welcoming speech Hrothgar recalls that the hero’s father â€Å"sought us Danes over the rolling waves,† and his warrior Unferth remembers that the hero â€Å"struggled with Brecca [youthful companion] in the broad sea in a swimming contest †¦ risked his life in the deep water †¦ hugged the sea, gliding through the boiling waves †¦ toiled seven nights in the sea.† A Dane â€Å"was tending to every courtesy† for Beowulf, for â€Å"such in those days could a seafarer expect.† King Hrothgar and Queen Welhtheow gave rich gifts â€Å"to those on the mead-bench who made the sea-journey.† In the Finnburh Episode, Hengest had to spend the winter months with Finn because â€Å"he could not steer his ring-prowed ship on the cold sea.†Ã‚   â€Å"Guthlaf and Oslaf spoke of their grief after the sea-journey.† The Danes carried Hildeburh, the queen of Danish ancestry, â€Å"over the sea.† â€Å"The surging waters† received Beowulf as he swam in pursuit of Grendel’s mother. During the battle Hrothgar and his retinue stared down at the â€Å"turbulent water.† Finally Beowulf returned, â€Å"protector... ... A man may bury his brother with the dead and strew his grave with the golden things he would have him take, tresures of all kinds, but gold hoarded when he here lived cannot allay the anger or God towards a soul sin-freighted.      The Seafarer concludes with a rather lengthy prose exhortation to his heareres to fix their hopes on heaven.    The characters in the Old English poem Beowulf certainly delighted in the seas. From this essay it can be appreciated that their attitude toward the sea is quite comparable with that expressed in another Old English poem, The Seafarer.       BIBLIOGRAPHY    Chickering, Howell D.. Advanced Maternal Age

Women in the United States are experiencing unprecedented opportunities to pursue education and professional careers. One potential down side to this situation is that women find themselves putting off starting a family until they complete their education and feel comfortable in their employment. In many cases this can extend into the woman’s late 30’s or even early 40’s.   Advanced maternal age may also have negative effects on fertility and the outcomes of a successful pregnancy. Considering all the factors, a woman should consider putting off starting a family and build a career as long as she has educated herself on all the risks of advanced maternal age.For years, women have been under the assumption that as long as they were bearing children under the age of 35, fertility and child mortality were at a minimum.   Recent studies have shown that this assumption is far from the truth and may eliminate childbearing for those women who wait into their late 30 ’s and early 40’s to start having children.   Education for women by gynecologists and obstetricians has been insufficient and most women are â€Å". . . surprised—even shocked—to learn that fertility begins to fall in their late 20’s (Hatcher, 2002).†Ã‚   Most women are finding out too late that they have simply put off having children too long and are now unable to bear children without intervention.   Fertility treatments are an expensive option, but are only available to those that can afford the treatments that insurance does not cover.Pregnancies that do occur at advanced maternal age have lower success rates.   Increased maternal age, typically over the age of 35, carries higher chances of miscarriage; higher increases in pregnancy complications like high blood pressure, diabetes, and placental problems; and increased chance of having a child with a chromosomal disorder (Children’s Specialist, 2007).   The good news is that medical advances in prenatal and perinatal care have diminished the effects that many of these complications have on pregnancies at advanced maternal age.   Safe pregnancies after the age of 35 are occurring at much higher rates with advanced blood testing and ultrasounds that allow early detection and treatment of potential problems. For many modern women, pursuing education and professional careers are the norm.   More women than ever in history are pursuing careers, not just jobs that add extra income.   Most career paths take years to build in order to reach the top of success.   The drive to achieve and succeed has pushed many women toward putting off starting a family till their careers are firmly on track.   With medical care helping to make child bearing in later years safer, women are choosing to put careers before family.   There are many advantages for women to wait to start a family:Financial stability Relationship stability Increased maturity Increased l ife experiences Larger support networks Better education Although these advantages may be present for a younger mother, the chance of a woman having all the advantages increases with age.   These advantages allow the mother to provide the best possible start for the child and to be the best mother she has the potential to be.The dilemma remains that when women take themselves out of the workforce to bear a child, a disadvantage occurs when compared to male counterparts.   An argument can be made that a woman with an established career and older age may have a better chance of regaining status once she returns to work due to her previous proven results and successes.   A younger woman just starting out in a career and taking a leave of absence to bear a child will not have a consistent track record to fall back on once she returns to work.   The advantage that an advance maternal age woman has may be the difference between a successful return to a career rather than being pas sed over for those who are not choosing to bear children.  Ã‚   The dilemma to put off childbearing looms large for many career women and must be considered along with the risks of advanced maternal age. There is hope for women who choose to honor both children and careers.   Proper education, healthy lifestyles, current medical advances, and pure determination help women of advanced maternal age have the balanced lives they desire.   While it is true that fertility declines in the late 20’s and that â€Å". . . women perform best at childbearing when they are young. . . (Gosden, 1995)†, these factors should not be the only consideration when choosing between careers and families.   â€Å"For reasons still far from clear, human evolution has allowed the female reproductive system to age faster than other body parts (Gosden, 1995).†Ã‚   The mental aspect of child rearing and career advancement need to be fully considered.   Physically, advanced maternal age does carry risks to both mother and fetus, but medical advances have severely reduced the chances of unsuccessful pregnancy outcomes.   Mentally, women who have built successful careers are better fit to raise children in later years rather than rushing to bear children in early years to avoid the physical risk.In all, advanced maternal age carries risks with fertility and successful pregnancy outcomes, but as long as the woman is educated on these risks, putting off child bearing should be considered in order to foster a successful career.   Medical advances have decreased pregnancy risks and advanced maternal age women should take full advantage to have a balanced life filled with both career and family.ReferencesChildren’s Specialists. 2007. Effects of Eminem on Rap and Black Culture essays

Effects of Eminem on Rap and Black Culture essays The Effects Of Eminem on Rap and Black Culture The popularity of Marshall Mathers III, a.k.a. Eminem, in todays rap culture is undeniable; with his Marshall Mathers LP selling 1.76 million copies in its first week after release and The Eminem Show selling 285,000 copies on its first day. (mtv.com) Since his entry into a predominately African-American art form, Eminem has been thrust into the spotlight, and has done more than just live up to expectations, gaining countless loyal fans and even more bitter enemies along the way. Among the enemies is Raymond Benzino Scott, a rapper and co-owner of The Source, the largest Hip-Hop magazine in the country. Recently, Benzino released a song aimed to attack Eminem, entitled Pull Your Skirt Up. The lyrics attacked Eminems race, along with his street credibility and skill as a rapper. Eminem wasted no time answering back, releasing The Sauce, an attack at the magazine and Benzino, in which he states that he did not start the battle, but he will finish it; furthermore Nail in The Coff in, an attack aimed solely at Benzino, takes shots at his age, business practices, and promotion of his nine year old sons rap career. While Benzino insists that his opinion in no way reflects the opinion of the magazine, every issue since the beginning of this feud has included at least one article aimed to attack either Eminem or another artist on his record label, Shady Records. The most recent was aimed at 50 Cent, the newest addition to Shady Records, who currently has the one of the top selling albums in the country. The magazine has also begun to print a comic strip in every issue that illustrates the evil powers that have taken over rap (Eminem, Shady Records, and Dr. Dres Aftermath Record.) And the good forces (black rap artists) are fighting back to take over what is rightfully theirs. The ...

TELS 3340 Case Studies Essays

TELS 3340 Case Studies Essays TELS 3340 Case Studies Paper TELS 3340 Case Studies Paper Narmin Azizli Case study 2-A 1 . What is Marilyns responsibility to her present employer regarding her knowledge that several employees are planning to seek positions with the new company? Marilyn is an experienced supervisor, and she is responsible to report if there are any problems with employees. In my opinion, she should inform middle or top management that there is possibility that some employees might leave. By doing this she is not telling on her employees. She is making sure that management will be prepared if someone leaves. In addition, if Marilyn informs top management about he issue, they might consider higher pay rates and better benefits in order to keep their current employees. 2. How should Marilyn reply to the recruiter who is asking her to come in for an interview? Does this constitute an ethnical decision for her? This does constitute and ethical decision for Marilyn. First, she needs to decide if she wants to stay with her current employer, or work for a new company. I believe that it is not unethical to take a Job interview, or find out more about benefits this new company might offer her. In my opinion, she needs to inform her current employer hat she is considering other options before taking an interview. 3. Is it ethical for one company to receive funds to move into an area when other companies struggle to keep Jobs from going offshore or from being lost to automation? First, the company that is moving into an area specializes in computer parts. Other companies which struggled with Job losses were in the textile field. There is a possibility that computer parts manufacturing plant has better chances of succeeding in that town than textile company. So why not? I dont think this is unethical. Especially, if new Jobs will be created in a small town that was hit hard ith Job losses. Community will benefit if there are new Job opportunities. Case study 3-A 1 . Outline the specific steps Cliff should have taken with Sonja prior to their meeting with Cindy to ensure the meeting went smoothly with no surprises. First, if the company had problems with Cindys performance at work they needed to follow certain procedures. Supervisor needs to identify the problem, once it is clear, so is the procedure to handle it Procedure is a standardized way ot responding to repetitive problems. Cliff is the corporate property manager; Sonja is corporate assistant property manager. Cliff should have been the one talking to Cindy, not Sonja. In my opinion, Sonja was not even supposed to be in the room. In this case, Cliff was supposed to tell Sonja if she wants to sit in, she can, but he will be the one talking to Cindy. He has the firing power, not Sonja. In addition, it was Just simple meeting to discuss sales expectations for Cindy. Cliff showed that he is a weak supervisor by letting his assistant to fire an employee during sales expectations meeting. 2. As supervisor, what should Cliff have done when it became apparent Sonja was overstepping her authority during the meeting with Cindy? Cliff was supposed to stop Sonja and let her know that she doesnt have that power. Moreover, he also could ask her to leave the room. He did not follow company protocol during the dismissal, which is very bad for company image. 3. What steps do you believe Heather should take with Sonja? With Cindy? I believe that Heather, as a seasoned veteran of HR needs to talk to Sonja and let her know that she needs to apologize to Cindy, and never overstep her authority again. In addition, I also think that it would be appropriate for Cliff and Cindy to have another meeting, where Cliff should apologize for what happened to make sure that this ncident does not affect the company and all members of the executive committee. Case Study 4-A 1. Explain how work specialization is important to Jack as a building and grounds supervisor. Work specialization means that rather than an entire Job being done by one individual, it is broken down into a number of steps that are each completed by a separate individual. Jacks main Job is to ensure that the inside of the buildings and the grounds are clean and in good repair and are pleasant places for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This sounds like a simple description of his Job, but it includes a lot more responsibilities. He has to make sure that everything is working fine, take care of plants, snow removal, heat and air conditioning, and maintain constant level of humidity in the greenhouse for biology department. He manages seven other full time workers. Each of them has their own responsibilities. He also hires part time workers depending on the need. Jack cant possibly do it all alone. He needs at least one person for each Job. In addition, he monitors their work, makes sure that everything is getting done. Work specialization is very important for Jacks job. It is very beneficial, but it also has its cons. Boredom, fatigue, stress, low productivity, poor quality, high turnover are all negative things that can come with work specialization. Jack needs to motivate his employees, make sure that they are nappy and nave no problems. A good way to do this is to make them teel I ike DOSS of their Job, he needs to show that he trusts them and they can make good decisions. Moreover, it will be beneficial to involve them in decision process too. For example, one of the employees has specialization in heating and plumbing. He is more experienced in this field. So listening to ideas he has to offer will be beneficial to Jack nd will show to that employee that his thoughts and ideas count. 2. What type of organizational structure does this community college have? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this structure? This community college has functional organizational structure. Functional structure is defined as an organization in which similar and related occupational specialties are grouped together. The strength of this structure is work specialization. Putting like specialties together results in economies of scale, minimizes duplication of personnel and equipment, and employees are satisfied because they are working ith people Just like themselves. The weakness of this structure is that organization focuses on functional goals and loses sight of its best interests. In other words, this can lead to complicated communication and long decision making processes. No one is responsible for end results, so members within individual functions have little understanding of what people in other functions are doing. In addition, employees can neglect the larger view of the company and its goals and objectives. When an employee has understanding of future goals, and visions of the company he/she can contribute more. When you are doing one Job and not seeing how it benefits the organization in long term can lead to burnout and low productivity. It is important to feel and see that what you are doing matters and benefits the company. 3. Discuss the factors that determine the size of Jacks span of control. Span of control stands for the number of employees a supervisor can efficiently and effectively direct. However, there is no universal answer. The factors that determine the size of Jacks span of control are his experience and competency, level of training and experience of his employees, how complex are employee activities, how many ifferent types of Jobs are under the supervisors direction, how extensive the departments formal rules and regulations are. Since each of Jacks full time workers specializes in different areas, it shows that the Jobs are more varied which leads to the narrower span of control. Each worker is responsible for different types of things that needs to be done around campus, which makes their activities more complex. More complex activities lead to narrower span of control. Since each worker does different things Jack needs to review each task that is completed separately, it takes more time. I think seven full time workers and part timers depending on season is enough for Jack. Case study 5-A 1 . Why is it important for Jameel to know about the laws and regulations that affect human resource practice? Since one of Jameels responsibilities is to coordinate the part-time temporary work needs of several local companies, it is very important for him to know about laws and regulations that affect human resource practice. He needs to know about equal employment opportunities laws, and selection process which must be handled without regard to race, sex, religion, age, color, national origin, or disability. 2. Why is it important for Jameel to know how to determine staffing needs? Demand for human resources is a result of demand for what the department produces. If company needs to complete certain amount of work, and there are not enough current employees to complete the work, the company will need more employees. By assessing current human resource and future human resource needs and developing a program to meet future human resource needs which is employment planning, Jameel can know exactly how many potential employees he needs to recruit. 3. What are some recruiting methods that Jameel might use to ensure that he has the ight employees to match the needs of employers? Some recruiting methods Jameel might use are employee referrals, advertisements, school placements, temporary help services, and employee leasing and independent contractors. In addition, he could also use online recruiting websites which are very popular. . Research the employment selection process of three businesses in your community. Ask questions like these: What type of and how much testing do they require? Is an application, resume, or work sample required? Who conducts the interviews and how long are they? Who makes the final decision to hire a new mployee? How long is the process? Three businesses that I researched are Kroger, Starbucks, and Mason Nails. In order to apply for a Job at Kroger you need fill out an online application. First part of their application is designed to collect personal information, and second part is assessment. The assessment is 17 pages long with 5 questions on each page. The assessment helps them to determine if you are a good fit for the company. Moreover, they also do background check and drug testing. Once your application is selected local manager of Kroger in the area where you live will conduct the interview. The nterviews usually lasts 15/20 minutes. Local manager makes the final decision to hire an employee. The process can take 60 to 90 days (including application processing time). In order to apply for a Job at Starbucks an application process is required. They dont require any testing. Usually branch manager conducts the interview and it is approximately 20/30 minutes. Branch manager makes final decision to hire a new employee. The process is 20/30 days long. In Mason Nails usually potential employee does not need to till an application. It someone is interested they need to come in and talk to the manager. If manager needs additional employees he/she will set up and interview with interested person. They would do skills test on potential employee (to see if they can do manicure/pedicure). In addition, license from cosmetology school is required. Manager/owner makes the final decision to hire. The process is short, it can be a week or two. Case Study 6-A 1 . Refer to the steps of the control process. Where in the process do the steps taken by the Florida resort hotel fall? The steps taken by the Florida resort hotel fall into the first step of control process which is measuring actual performance. Managers started evaluating room leanliness based on the instructional video information. Because of economic turmoil hospitality industry has been hit hard. Since clean rooms are critical component in customer satisfaction, managers of Florida resort hotel decided to use $10 test. This test worked and guest rooms cleaned to an impeccable standard. 2. As a supervisor, do you think the $10 test is a fair and appropriate method to measure the performance of the housekeeping staff? Why or why not? I think the $10 test is appropriate and fair method to measure performance. Housekeepers usually do their Job, but they dont clean every single little spot. They are not motivated to do so. If you fire them and hire new staff, the new staff will do the Job, but it wont be perfect. Perfect clean rooms are essential for customer satisfaction. Therefore, for housekeepers to have motivation to clean to perfection $10 test works. I look at it like tips, for good service you get tips. Same can be applied to this situation. 3. Describe which type of control is illustrated in this case. How do you know? Corrective control is a type of control that provides feedback after an activity is finished to prevent future deviations. Corrective control is illustrated in this case, ecause after the room has been cleaned, the manager would walk in lay 10 one dollar bills on the bed and take a dollar for each mistake. The manager gives feedback after the cleaning has been done. Case study 7-A 1. In her new Job, how might Toby make use of the knowledge she has about decision-making styles? Toby can use her knowledge about decision-making styles by examining how her boss, and other supervisors make their decisions. Once she knows their styles, she could find the best style to introduce her new ideas and take actions that she thinks will work better in the call center. 2. How would Toby benetlt by examining the styles ot ner boss and those ot the other supervisors? By examining the styles of her boss and other supervisors Toby can understand how two different people, with access to the same information, can differ in the ways they approach decisions and in the final choices they make. In addition, once she fgures out their decision-making styles she will know exactly how to approach them with new ideas and offers. 3. In a popular television show The Apprentice, we see a particular style of decision making. Identify other public personalities by their decision-making styles. George W. Bush the 43rd president of US has directive decision-making style. Most of his decisions are quick and made with minimal information. On the other hand, Barack Obamas decision making style is analytical. He tends to be more careful with his decisions, considers more alternatives, and reviews a lot of information before making a decision. Moreover, Jimmy Kimmel famous talk show host has behavioral decision making style. He works well with others, tries to avoid conflict, and seeks acceptance. In conclusion, Marc Jacobs who is a famous designer has conceptual decision making style. He tends to consider many alternatives, his focus is long range, and he is creative. Case Study 8-A 1 . Describe the behaviors (stealing) by these employees in terms of their needs, the organizations effect on them, equating their inputs and outcomes, and what employees expect from their employer. Need is a physiological or psychological deficiency that makes certain outcomes seem attractive. When your needs are unsatisfied it leads to tension, which sets off a drive to satisfy that need. These plant workers are unhappy with decisions that their company is making, they cant do anything about it. If they quit, they will have no income at all. Stealing seems like a revenge for them. In order to satisfy their needs they steal. Moreover, the organization was too busy with its own problems that they forgot about their workers. According to Herzbergs research if we want to motivate people in their Jobs, we need to emphasize on achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, and growth. The organizations decisions had negative effect on the employees. Organization made them feel like they dont have a voice. Equity theory states that employees perceive what they can get from a Job situation outcomes) in relations to what they put into it (inputs), and then compare their input-outcome ratio with the input-outcome ratio of others. These plant workers were getting paid certain amount of money for their Job, suddenly their salary decreased. Naturally, they are very angry about the situation. They know that they are getting paid less for the amount of work they are doing. Finally, according to expectancy theory, an employee will be motivated to exert a high level ot e ttort when ne or sne believes that effort will lead to a good performance appraisal; that a good appraisal ill lead to organizational rewards such as a bonus, a salary increase, or a promotion; and that the rewards will satisfy the employees personal goals. In this situation, plant workers are definitely not expecting anything from their company. All they got is salary decrease, and there will not be any bonuses or salary increase. They have no motivation to put full effort in their Job. 2. What do you believe supervisors could have done differently to avert this potential problem? I believe that, the idea that pay cut would cause less harm than eliminating several obs altogether was a bad idea. Reducing pay levels in order to prevent layoffs is not a solution. It will bring more harm to the company, Just like it did in this case. Imagine you are making certain amount of money at your Job, and one day your supervisor announces that you will be making less. It is definitely not fair for you. A company provokes anger of all of its employees by decreasing their salary, whereas layoffs are hard and sad but they dont affect work productivity of remaining employees. Layoffs could have been hard but better decision to make.

Treaty of Verdun Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Treaty of Verdun - Research Paper Example From the ancient time, the ruling authority in European Union was keen on proper implementation or laws. The pattern of ruling by the leaders of Europe always suggested the fact that every step taken by the countries belonging to the European Union was based on various treaties which was approved willingly and constitutionally by the EU member countries. From a broader perspective, a treaty can be defined as an obligatory contract between EU member countries. In modern times any treaty related to the European Nation is consisted of the objectives of European Union, rules set by the European Union as a group for all the member countries, and most importantly how the decisions will be made in the future taking into consideration the relationship between the EU and its member countries. The main objectives of the Treaties are to ensure EU get more efficient and the process of ruling get more transparent. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the significance of the Treaties of Verdun, 843 which changed the history of the Europe for ever. The paper will also focus on how the treaties change the structure of the Europe as a whole, the consequence that this treaty had as a whole. From the historical perspective, the Franconian Empire was one of the most substantial changes toward integrated administration of the medieval passà ©. During this Reich, which was comprised of both Romanian and German people, the foundation for the political, social and cultural evolution of Western Europe was laid down thoroughly. The consequence of instincts originating from this initial social and party-political center can barely be exaggerated. The conjunction of Franconian kings and Kaiser with the papacy had a long lasting significance just not for the successive history of Franconia, but also for the entire Europe. â€Å"The alliance of Franconian emperor and the Papacy was of major significance for the
